What Kind Of Training Does A Urologist Have?
Besides 4 years of medical school, urologists have at least 4 years of general surgical training followed by 6 more years of special training in Urology focused on the urinary tract and male reproductive system.
Now in Malaysia there is currently a move to try training medical doctors in Urology with direct admission to a 6 year urological training program.
Malaysian Board of Urology Training
The Malaysian Board of Urology which was formed by the Malaysian Urological Association has been conducting its Board of Urology Training and exit examination certification since the year 2000. Formal Urology training has thus been in many ways unique since it has been driven by a professional society with involvement of the MOH as the main training centres together with the Universities and with the participation of private Urologists in the academic programme.
The Malaysian Board of Urology members has comprised of all the Head of the Urology training centres in the MOH Hospitals and Universities with the Chairman being the National Head of the Urological Services for the MOH. The MOH for its part has always supported this initiative by the Urologists ever since October 2005.
In the year 2008, the Malaysian Board of Urology had its first Conjoint MBU/FRCSG Urology examination in collaboration with the Royal College of Physician and Surgeons of Glasgow, with its conjoint exam held annually in November at Hospital Selayang. With trainees from Singapore, Brunei and Myanmar sitting for this exam, Malaysia has become the hub for FRCSG Urology examinations in the region.
The structure of the Urology training programme is based on the curriculum approved by the Malaysian Medical Council and the Malaysian Board of Urology (MBU) conducts the training programme. They have a structured programme and modules to complete in all the various fields in Urology.
